Cancer is an uncontrolled and abnormal cell growth that can spread to other parts of the body, wreaking havoc and disrupting normal bodily functions. Childhood cancers grow more rapidly than adult cancers because the cancer tissues grow together with the fast-growing tissues of the child.

In Singapore, about 120 new cases of childhood cancer are reported every year. 50% of the newly diagnosed cases are children with leukemia, with 70% being the cure rate, which is comparable to the cure rate of developed countries. For every 3 children suffering from leukemia, 1 child is suffering from brain tumor. Children with newly diagnosed cancer are usually aged between 0 and 6 years old.

Children, under the age of 17, have to battle intense pain, a rigorous treatment regime, and for some, the trauma of undergoing an amputation. Besides the physical pain and depression caused by cancer, young patients often feel isolated because of the withdrawal from school. Cancer is a debilitating disease that takes its toll, physically, emotionally and mentally, not only on the child but also on his or her family. Parents are often in a state of confusion, anxiety and helplessness when they are suddenly faced with the uncertainty of their child's future.

Statistics like these have prompted the Mister Singapore Organization and MISTER INTERNATIONAL to join forces with nationally recognized Children's Cancer Foundation to improve the quality of life of children with cancer and their families through enhancing their emotional, social and medical well being. Children's Cancer Foundation is an independent organization, funded entirely by public and corporate donations. Staffed by a team of trained professionals and with a group of committed volunteers, Children's Cancer Foundation has assisted some 1,200 families since 1996 by providing counseling, employing therapeutic play, conducting support groups, organizing children and family outings, offering financial assistance, educating the families, supporting training and research, and promoting public awareness.

Starting from 2006, the Mister Singapore Organization has made the decision to support children with cancer. MISTER INTERNATIONAL will dedicate his time with Children's Cancer Foundation, to advocate and educate childhood cancer awareness and championing his official cause through charitable events organized by Children's Cancer Foundation.
